A FAMILY is reeling from the death of a dad and his 15-year-old daughter in a car smash.
Stephen Rushworth, 37, and Shannan Harker died at the crash scene in Birkby Lane, Bailiff Bridge, Brighouse.
Heartbroken grandparents Jeffrey and Elizabeth Rushworth were today struggling to cope with the loss of their son and granddaughter.
They were being comforted at home in Whinney Hill Park, Brighouse, by other family members, including Stephen's 40-year-old twin sisters, Diane Rushworth and Deborah Gallagher, both of Elland.
Stephen and Shannan were on their way to his parents' home when the accident happened at 5.15pm on Wednesday. Mr Rushworth, 72, said he sensed something was wrong after his son said he would be arriving home for a shower.
"I rang his phone three times and he never answered," he said.
It was 11.30pm before police confirmed the devastating news. "It is like a very bad dream and it has created a big gap in our lives," he said.
Mr Rushworth said his son was like a best mate and the whole family were fond of Shannan, who regularly spent time with her dad.
Diane and Deborah said their brother was a brilliant dad, uncle and friend.
Mrs Rushworth, 65, said her son had been living with his parents and was a "fantastic" personality.
"We just can't believe what has happened," she said.
Stephen was separated from his wife, Donna Wood, who was on holiday in Spain with their two children – Megan, seven, and Melanie, four.
Shannan, a pupil of Rastrick High, lived at Castle Hill, Rastrick, with her mum Kirsty and stepdad Richard. She also leaves a stepsister and stepbrother.
Stephen, a keep-fit fanatic, was a welder at Walker Bros, Elland.
"They have closed the factory for two days as a mark of respect," said Mr Rushworth.
Stephen and Shannan were in a VW Golf heading towards Bailiff Bridge when it was in collision with a van, which was then hit by a Peugeot 106.
